Tips on Easing the Cot to Big Bed Transition

October 12, 2018

For many parents, moving their toddlers from the cot to a big kid bed can be an exciting – and nerve wracking – milestone. While there is no perfect time to start the migration, most kids are ready to switch from the crib into a bed around the age of two. For stylist Karla Reed, the catalyst was her growing belly. "My daughter has been co-sleeping with us since she was about three months old," says Karla. "We are now expecting another baby and she no longer nurses in the night so it's about us all getting better sleep and safety for our new baby." Here more tips on making the transition from crib to bed as easy as possible.

Tip 1: Transition Before New Baby is Born
The arrival of a new baby is certainly a good reason to begin the crib to bed transition. Experts recommend transitioning your child about 8 weeks prior to your due date. This is especially important if you're a co-sleeping family like Karla's. Not only will the big kid bed help your older one get used to sleeping alone, but it's also much more comfortable for everyone. "We were finding it very difficult as I get bigger and more uncomfortable to have her in bed with us. She moves all around in the night always searching for one of us to snuggle or lean up against," says Karla.

Tip 2: Use a Transitional Item
Mum blogger Ashley Peavey, who is currently transitioning her son into a big kid bed from the crib advises to keep one thing constant. "Whether it be a blanket or a stuffed animal, give them something that stays the same and is familiar to your little one," she says.

Tip 3: Reassure Them They're Safe
"The hardest thing about transitioning her is how scared she gets sleeping alone," says Karla. Make sure to tell your child that they're safe and that you're right in the next room should they need you.
Tip 4: Use DockATot to ease the transition
One of the reasons the DockATot Grand was created was to help ease the transition from crib to toddler or big kid bed. The built-in, air-permeable bumpers act as bed rails, and give little ones a snug sense of security in their newer, bigger beds. "I've been amazed at how comforted my daughter is by her "bed," which is what she calls her DockATot," says Karla. "It keeps her snuggly and safe and has started training her to sleep with out spinning in circles. It's great that her "bed" moves with her into her big girl bed and gives her comfort."
Tip 5: Trust Your Instincts
"Do what feels best to you," advises Ashley. "People will give you all sorts of advice, but ultimately, you know what is best for your child!"
