Taking your newborn to the beach for the first time is something many parents look forward to. We anticipate relaxing on the sand with our precious baby...but little did we know taking a newborn to the beach can actually be a little more complicated!

To help you enjoy the Australian Dream this summer, we have compiled some life hacks below to give you a head-start on enjoying your baby's first beach days together as a family.

Feeding on the beach.

An important consideration for taking your newborn to the beach is keeping them fed and well hydrated in the heat. If you’re formula feeding, ready made bottles stored in an insulated bag are an absolute godsend for beach trips!

For Mamas who are breastfeeding, feeding on the beach may seem daunting. We've found one of the most comfortable and relaxing ways to breastfeed is to lie down on your side on a blanket or in a beach tent. If you don’t feel confident doing that or don’t have a chair to sit on, you could always try leaning against a friend’s back, or ask your partner to support you in their arms. Make sure you take a water bottle for yourself - breastfeeding is thirsty work!

Sun safety.

The best way to protect your baby’s delicate skin from the sun is to keep them in the shade. Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight. So dress your baby in light clothes to cover their limbs and a cute little sunhat. Find a space in the shade, or use a beach umbrella to keep the sun’s rays off your baby.

The DockATot Cabana Kit is a brilliant baby beach hack for taking a newborn to the beach. It attaches to the DockATot Deluxe and includes a retractable UV-protected shade of 50+ SPF that shields baby’s skin and eyes from the sun. It also comes in a range of gorgeous colours!

Ditch the stroller.

Unless your stroller has off-road wheels, it's not worth trying to take it on the beach. It’s far easier to carry your newborn in your arms or use a baby carrier. Baby carriers (like these from our friends at Babes in Arms) with mesh panels are especially good for hot days at the beach, enabling air to circulate around your baby and prevent overheating.

Keep it short.

Timing is everything when planning your first beach trip. Keep it short to begin with and then head to a nearby cafe where they have comfy seats, cold drinks and nappy-changing facilities are on hand.
